About the Event

The ARTEMIS Summer School 2026 is a two-and-a-half-day, fully in-person training and networking programme dedicated to Reactive Heritage Digital Twins (RHDT) and their application to cultural heritage conservation, restoration, safeguarding and valorisation.

The Summer School is organised within the framework of the ARTEMIS – Applying Reactive Twins to Enhance Monument Information Systems project (Grant Agreement No. 101188009), funded by the European Union.

Hof is a university city in the South-East of Germany. It can be reached via train or bus, with international flight or trains connecting to Munich, Nuremberg, Leipzig or Dresden.

About ARTEMIS

ARTEMIS aims to develop a fully-fledged Digital Twin approach to support and improve research and practice in conservation, restoration, safeguarding and valorisation of Cultural Heritage. The project enables researchers and conservators to conduct virtual experiments and simulations, testing various conservation methods and assessing their potential impacts, without risking any damage to the original heritage items, with the goal of more effectively monitoring the condition of heritage assets, predicting potential risks, and responding proactively to conservation challenges.

Learning outcomes and professional relevance

The Summer School is conceived as a practice-oriented and collaborative learning environment. It aims to strengthen participants’ capacity to design, implement and critically assess Reactive Heritage Digital Twin approaches within institutional, professional and research contexts. Participants can expect to gain:

Comprehensive understanding of RHDT workflows, from 3D documentation to interoperability, reactivity and simulation services,
Direct engagement with ARTEMIS pilot cases through structured, collaborative workshops,
Applied insight into semantic interoperability, data ecosystems and FAIR-aligned strategies for sustainability and reuse,
Understanding of how real-time data (IoT/IoCT) and simulation tools can support monitoring, risk assessment and decision-making,
Experience with collaborative AR/VR environments for analysis, annotation and reporting,
Enhanced capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration across heritage and technical domains

A certificate of attendance will be issued at the end of the ARTEMIS Summer School.

Who should apply

Applications are invited from professionals and researchers working at the intersection of cultural heritage and advanced digital technologies.

This call is particularly relevant for:

Heritage managers, conservators, restorers, archivists and curators,
Public administration officers and cultural policy professionals,
Researchers in cultural heritage and digital humanities,
3D documentation and modelling specialists,
Experts in data infrastructures and semantic interoperability,
IoT/IoCT developers, simulation specialists and AR/VR professionals,
Digital twin researchers and technology providers.

Applicants should demonstrate clear relevance of and interest in the ARTEMIS themes and a willingness to engage in interdisciplinary exchange.

The summer school’s working language is English.

Selection criteria

Given the limited number of places (20 participants), participation is granted through a competitive selection process. Applications will be assessed by the ARTEMIS Selection Committee according to the following criteria:

Strategic relevance: alignment of the applicant’s profile and activities with ARTEMIS objectives and RHDT implementation challenges,
Motivation: coherence, quality and realism of the applicant’s learning goals,
Professional experience: demonstrated experience in heritage and/or advanced digital technologies,
Cohort contribution: complementarity of the applicant’s profile and contribution to a diverse and balanced group.

Each application will be independently reviewed by two members of the Selection Committee. Applications will be scored and ranked. Final decisions will consider both individual merit and the overall balance of the cohort, including geographical, institutional and gender balance.

Ten (10) places are reserved for qualified ARTEMIS survey respondents who expressed interest in training activities. If not fully allocated, these places will be reassigned according to the same evaluation criteria.

Financial support

Successful applicants will receive accommodation for four nights (15-19 June 2026) and travel reimbursement up to €200 upon submission of valid receipts. Participation in the Summer School is free of charge.

Participants are expected to attend the full duration of the Summer School and they must provide feedback on the summer school and a report after their visit.
