Digital Humanities Data Sprint 2026

The two-day workshop “Digital Humanities Data Sprint” offers an innovative format for early-career researchers in the field of Digital Humanities (DH). The project aims to familiarize participants with the challenges and opportunities of working with digital data. The workshop is organized by the Digital Age Research Center and the University Library of the University of Klagenfurt and is open to PhD students and Master’s students from all Austrian universities. Participants can apply via a Call for Participation. 

About the Project 

The workshop focuses on data from the social media platform Twitter, particularly from the archive of author Ianina Ilitcheva. Participants will work in groups with these data, which will be made available in a secure environment on-site. The goal is to explore, analyze, and develop potential research questions. A “critical data” perspective will be adopted, reflecting on the possibilities and limitations of digital data and methods. 

The workshop combines theoretical and practical elements. Participants will be introduced to key concepts in research data management and Critical Data Studies, as well as the history and context of the datasets. Collaborative work with the data will provide opportunities for reflection and discussion. The workshop concludes with the presentation and critical evaluation of the results. 

In addition to the content-related work, ethical and practical research questions will be discussed, such as the responsible use of personal data as research data. The workshop contributes to bridging Digital Humanities and Critical Data Studies and promotes the development of innovative digital methods and tools.
